Project Profile: Total gut renovation of 45,000 square feet,
from abandoned grocery store to vibrant college preparatory school,
in 7 months. Total project cost: $5,000,000
Piedmont Community Charter School, a Challenge
Foundation Academy, turned to CSDC to purchase and renovate an
abandoned local Winn-Dixie to accommodate its growing facilities
needs. CSDC's trusted partner, Bouma Construction, served as design
builder to create a bright and efficient new home for the school's
6-12th grade college preparatory and fine arts programs. Design
commenced in February, construction started in April, and the fully
functional campus welcomed students back-to-school in August
2010.
From the early programming stages through completion, the focus
was on providing high-value solutions that stretched every
available dollar. Coolers, freezers, and shelving were replaced
with hallways, restrooms, lowered ceilings, gym space, windows, and
classrooms. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were
entirely replaced to meet current building codes and safety
requirements. Despite discovery that copper thefts had entirely
gutted the electrical service entrance, the "Can Do" team still
delivered the project on budget and on time.
The result is a modern, appealing educational facility where
students are challenged every day as their teachers prepare them
for college.
